When to choose SPARC
- Your people need to build trust with stakeholders, so others feel confident acting on their ideas.
- They need to get others involved and moving towards shared goals, even when they are not in charge.
- They need strong relationships across teams and functions.
Five needs decide how people respond
SPARC is built on applied neuroscience. When a message threatens one of five fundamental needs, people move away from it. When it meets them, they move towards it.
- S afetyClarity, predictability, structure.
- P restigeRecognition, personal value, results.
- A utonomyChoice, freedom, personal control.
- R elatednessTrust, cooperation, empathy.
- C orrectnessClear rules, fairness, transparency.
Away A need is threatened. People resist, defend, disengage.
Towards A need is met. People open up, engage, say yes.
The two games
Game 1The Colours
Each card on the board carries a message from a stakeholder. Players choose, from their own hand, the reply that best meets the need behind the words. Good matches score, mismatched or negative replies don't. The game sharpens listening and reading between the lines.
1 Game 2Time Trials
Teams of two race the clock. One player reads a line aloud, the other names the persuasion strategy behind it and the need it addresses. The game covers ten strategies, from the small step and tactical empathy to the helicopter view and honesty. Hard cards go to a separate pile and are discussed with the trainer.
